I'm apparently wanted for my data entry skills. By a company I applied to two months ago. They called just after I accepted the contractual position at my current job [mid-March]. I told them that I wanted to give this job a go. They said to call back after the two months if the job was over.

It doesn't look like the job will be over very soon. It's still full-time hours (not great for my writing), & I've got a good rapport with my work colleagues. It's really only the people, the money & the easy-access that's keeping me there, though. I absolutely hate the work. I'm awesome at it; I just don't feel awesome about it. And I don't like not feeling awesome about stuff 40hrs a week.

The other job is data entry too, but it's part-time! And it's exactly the same distance from home [give or take 2mins]. I just don't know the pay or the people.

They called my mobile phone today, but I missed it. They didn't leave a message; rather they called home & mum took the details. So now I'm wondering if I should accept an interview if they'd like one.

[Poll #1563751]

There are a few other part-time jobs I'd like to apply for now, too. Strange how they all show up when the contract nears its end. Makes me think I should move on.

Definitely go for an interview, because even if you don't want the job, it's good practice for jobs you do want. As to the rest, here's embertine's tough love time:

I think you have to think carfully about the pros and cons of part-time work. Part-time sounds great if it gives you time to write, but let's be realistic; you are not marketing or using your writing in any practical way right now, and unless you're on the point of publishing your trilogy and I missed it, you won't be in the foreseeable future.

You're a 30-year-old woman who lives with her mum. Eventually, your mum is going to ask you to get a proper job and leave. In the meantime, you can't get the dog you want, seemingly because your mum doesn't think you will take financial or practical responsibility for it. Is she right?

What do you actually want? If you're going to be a professional writer, in whatever field, you can't just do it when the Muse strikes. You have to be able to do it to pay the bills, and if you can't do that then you have to support yourself with other work. I've done data entry, and I could barely support myself doing it full-time.

I think you have talent. I'd like to read your trilogy someday soon in shiny, shiny paperback. I'll even design the jackets... but you have to finish it and market it first, and you've gotta make rent in the meantime.

N.

I'm not against full-time work in general; just full-time data entry. If I was offered full-time work in a creative field, I'd go for it. My brain needs to be stimulated, & data entry does not do that. It might've done so at one time (I know it did when I started writing the trilogy), but I guess my brain's become immune to that. *shrugs*

In the meantime, you can't get the dog you want, seemingly because your mum doesn't think you will take financial or practical responsibility for it.
If that's what she thinks, she's never said that to me. All that I remember her saying is that she doesn't want anymore hair dropping on the floor. Since I seem to have a male-mind regarding tidyness, I understand why she says that.

In the last few months I've accepted that getting another dog is not in the universe's plan for me right now, but that doesn't stop me from looking at my canine options. If and when the opportunity strikes, I want to be prepared.

I know exactly what you mean about the data entry; I found it incredibly soul-destroying. Even fairly basic admin roles are better than that. I'm glad that you like the people you work with, as I think that makes a massive difference, even if the work is dull.

Of course I recognise that I was incredibly lucky to choose a profession that I knew absolutely nothing about and still really like it! Could easily have gone the other way.
